Growth

As they say, the top three biggest issues in Southern Pines are Growth, Growth, and Growth. I am not against growth. I do, however, believe we are not fully prepared to ensure the increased growth, development, and redevelopment we are expecting will be compatible with the character of our community. We need to use any tools at our disposal, to ensure we have a well-defined community vision and proper planning in place. We must ensure future development accommodates the needs and desires of Southern Pines, not the other way around.

I believe we should:

-Complete and adopt our Comprehensive Long Range Plan as soon as possible and begin implementing its recommedations.

-Expand our Historic District to also include historic residential properties, especially those near downtown. Ordinances will also need to be updated to reflect the district's new application to residential uses.

-Not let the current economic downturn lull us into complacency. What we have now is a little bit of breathing room for us to be able to prepare for the inevitable return of development pressures.
